Aside from family pictures, the only photograph showed a dead fish wrapped in a copy of The Wall Street Journal. Bill Blundell, a near legendary writer at the Journal, had bequeathed it to him as a humble reminder of the shelf life of most newspaper stories. A Los Angeles native, Emshwiller was a Journal “lifer” who had gone to work for the paper just after he graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1972. He’d worked in San Francisco, Detroit, and New York before going home to Los Angeles in 1985.

The Journal was especially sensitive to this issue because in the early 1980s it had weathered its own crisis when it was learned that a regular writer of the column, R. Foster Winans, had been providing advance information on the pieces to Wall Street professionals who traded on the information. Winans was fired and later went to federal prison. Used responsibly, though, the “Heard” was a powerful tool that touched an influential readership. Smith began making calls to analysts to get their views on Enron post-Skilling.

It would have been interesting to see what he’d said. He didn’t mention the partnerships in the Skilling piece, which ran the next day, August 16. Emshwiller liked the headline, which clearly challenged the company’s official line on the resignation: enron’s skilling cites stock-price plunge as main reason for leaving ceo post. The day that story ran, Smith, Emshwiller, and Friedland talked by telephone. They agreed that there was at least one more story to do when Smith returned from vacation the following Monday.
